I had my first 'Uniquely You Session' this past weekend, and it was everything I'd hoped it would be! If you're not familiar with my initiative, here's the Coles notes version:
Inspired by my son's ASD (autism spectrum disorder) diagnosis and the understanding of additional financial challenges families face due to costs of therapies, adaptive toys and equipment, respite or support worker wages, etc. And many, many other aspects not mentioned that impact both family and child. I am offering one free session per month to a family with a child that has a formally diagnosed developmental need.
My goal is to provide community awareness and create a fun experience for families to connect and create treasured, tangible memories. I have had this initiative mapped out in my head for years, so finally, being able to execute it had me legit vibrating with excitement. The kids matched my energy, and they arrived ready to play!
We came together for this session because M was diagnosed with Spastic Triplegia Cerebral Palsy at a young age after having a brain hemorrhage at birth. M has braces on his legs to help align his feet to make it easier to walk. His muscles are tight (spastic) in both his legs, feet, and right arm. He has minimal fine motor function in these limbs and struggles with gross motor skills due to tightness. M faces daily physical and motor function challenges, but that is far from the first thing you think of when you meet him. His kindness and humour shine brightly, and his resilience and determination match his big heart! M is capable of many amazing things, and he approaches each challenge with confidence, paired with so much love and support from his family. Seriously, they were all so adorable together. I was heart-melting all over the place!
Partway through the session, the kids started requesting photo ideas, so we spent some time exploring their creative concepts. I always approach family sessions, with the focus being on the kids. Having them involved in the process creates an entertaining atmosphere which keeps them motivated. Plus, I love to see what they will come up with! It's a riot!
All family sessions are heartwarming, but these sessions, in particular, are fulfilling and inspiring for me. I will happily give my time again and again to these sessions. I can't wait for the next one!
If you know of a family that would benefit from this opportunity, please share so that they can apply to participate in a future 'Uniquely You Session.' https://www.vanveitcreative.com/uniquelyyousessions
